How to Cure a Clay Chiminea — the First Firing

Why curing matters

Curing (the initial hardening burn) strengthens the clay molecules and helps your chiminea withstand the high temperatures of everyday fires. Skipping it is the most common cause of early cracks in any clay outdoor fireplace.

What you need

• Sand • Dry kindling (thin twigs) • Newspaper • Matches or a lighter

Add a layer of sand about 10 cm deep inside the base of the chiminea. The fire will be built on top of this layer, so it should sit at a comfortable height.

Step by step

Step 1. Place one or two balls of newspaper inside the empty base and light them. Keep the flames small. Let the fire burn out completely and the chiminea cool down.

Step 2. Add the sand layer. This layer stays inside the chiminea for all future use.

Step 3. Build another fire, this time with paper and thin kindling. Once the flames reach a moderate height, let the fire burn out and the chiminea cool completely.

Step 4. Repeat the lighting and cooling process two or three more times, each fire slightly larger than the last. Gradual heating and cooling adapts the clay to high temperatures and long burning sessions.

Common curing mistakes

The most frequent mistake is a big fire on day one: clay that has not been gradually heated expands too fast and can crack. The second is skipping the sand layer — embers directly on the base overstress the ceramic. The third: putting the fire out with water. A clay fire pit should always cool down naturally.

Long-term care for your clay chiminea

Empty the ash only when fully cold and keep the sand layer clean. In winter, store the chiminea under shelter or cover it — fired clay withstands 500-600°C, but freeze-thaw cycles with moisture inside the material can degrade it. The included lid keeps rain out of the chimney in the warm season. Ready for your first backyard fire? See the Sparkle Stone clay chiminea collection — handcrafted and made to order.
